Moving Preparation Checklist By Rachel Ragland

So you've done your research and found a moving company, made a reservation and started packing. What next? Well, before you get too far into packing your boxes you may want to go over this checklist before you pack something away that you might need to get to.

Transferring Services

There are quite a number of companies you'll need to call to change your address that you have on file and/or transfer or disconnect services with them. If you are transferring or disconnecting services make sure to do it at least 4 weeks before your moving date. If it's just a change of address allow 2 weeks time. Having your account number for each company on hand when you call will help speed the process. Make sure to write down any reference or confirmation numbers the company gives you.

  • Internet
  • Cable
  • Electric
  • Gas
  • Water
  • Lawn/House Services
  • Dr./Vet
  • Bank
  • Car Loan
  • Newspaper
  • Cell Phone
  • Vehicle Registration
  • Insurance
  • Credit Cards
  • HR Department at Work

Most importantly, don't forget to transfer your mailing address at the post office! This should be done at least 3 weeks ahead of moving day. Doing so will make sure you will still get mail from places you forgot to notify about your change of address.

Baby/Pet Sitter

No one wants to make moving day more stressful than it needs to be. Hiring a babysitter or pet sitter to watch your loved ones on moving day will make it easier on you and them. Pets always get nervous when their home is being emptied and there are people coming in and out. Dogs will bark and cats will hide under whatever they can find, until there's nothing left to hide under and they try to bolt for the door. Children can become quite a handful when they start crying because they can't get attention or something they want. Not to mention it makes quite the obstacle course for the movers if they're having to maneuver furniture around kids and/or pets which can lead to accidents.

Once you've finished with these arrangements you can finally get back to packing without worrying that you're forgetting something. Before you know it it's moving day, you're done unpacking and you can rest and relax in your brand new home!
