Getting Ready to Move House By Harry S Jones

You have accepted an offer on your house and are starting to panic where to start with all that packing! Moving house is always a stressful time to even the avid movers, so a bit of preparation always helps to make it as smooth and pain free as possible.

So where do you begin?

The best place to start is to create a checklist of all the tasks that have to be completed. Identify and prioritise so your packing and un-packing is in some sort of order, you don't want the kettle on the bottom of a box! You can use home moving checklist templates which are freely available online to help.

Start to go through your bills and make a note of the companies you will have to inform. Remember when the day actually comes you will have to provide your Electricity, water and gas company your final meter readings.

Start to go through each room making sure you really need to keep that item; it's amazing how much junk we all keep. Move the possessions you have decided to dump and either donate to a charity such as Oxfam, go to a car boot sale or place the items onto eBay.

At any stage of the move you can start to pack your items, I always suggest the earlier you can start the better, this will help reduce the mad rush you will experience towards the actual move date. Start collecting storage boxes, you can then start to pack the items you hardly use.

There are many companies available on line or locally who can provide removal cardboard boxes and also all the protective materials like Polystyrene Chips, Silica Gel or even Extra Strong Black Sacks so you can through the unwanted items away.

When the box is full remember never over load your box, you must label the box to help your removers know where to place the box in your new home. A good way to mark the boxes is to use room specific labelled tape.

Notify all your family and friends of your move, otherwise your £5 notes in your Christmas and birthday cards will be lost. Send all your contacts on your phone a text message, or send everyone email. Inform Royal mail and setup post redirection.

When you get your actual removal date book your removal company, make sure you get a few quotes as most differ.

When the day comes always load mugs, kettle, tea and coffee into your car; removal men are always thirsty! Also know where the bed linen is ready to go onto your bed.

Good luck with your move.
