Wedding Cake VS Traditional Wedding Cake

Wedding Cupcake Trees - Are They Really a Cost Savings? By Karen S Musselman

Many couples are opting for wedding cupcake trees as a way to save money on their wedding cakes. And cupcake trees can be just as stunning as traditional wedding cakes since they can be designed on tiers just as large as a five tier wedding cake.

But let's take a look at the cost of wedding cup cakes versus traditional wedding cakes and see if they really will reduce your budget.

They Can Actually Cost About the Same and They're More Work!
Having a wedding cupcake tree instead of a traditional cake is no real savings if you start getting fancy with them. Cupcakes may cost less basically, as little as a buck or two per cupcake versus $3.25 and up per person or per slice of a traditional cake, but you certainly don't want the same kind of cupcakes you'd serve as a dessert at dinner or at a birthday party.

So now your bakery or cake designer, instead of decorating one large cake, has to miniaturize their work and decorate each cupcake individually as a separate mini wedding cake on its own, otherwise, you're looking at a few tiers worth of plain ordinary cupcakes. And even those must be frosted individually.

Then if you decide to add embellishments like fancy cupcake liners or monogrammed fondant hearts, you're really adding to the cost of the cupcakes.

Setting up a Cupcake Tree vs. Setting up a Traditional Cake
Now let's look at all of the work involved in setting up wedding cupcake trees as opposed to multi-tiered traditional wedding cakes.

Several little mini cakes per tier that must be placed on the tiers versus one cake per tier that sits centered on its tier. That's a lot of work, especially if you're serving 100 guests or more.

And if your baker charges for setting up the cake, you may run into some added costs with wedding cupcake trees versus traditional wedding cakes.

The easiest way to save with cupcakes...make your own wedding cupcake trees:

  • Check department stores and craft stores for cupcake stands.
  • Bake your own cupcakes or buy them already frosted at the grocery store.
  • Buy small decorations for the cupcakes at a discount store and match them to your wedding theme or colors
  • Buy table decorations to match your wedding theme.
  • Buy or bake one small cake for the top of the cupcake tree.
  • Ask your bridesmaids or family members to help set the cupcakes up before the reception.

So for the best savings on wedding cupcake trees, do your price comparisons first. Check with some local bakeries, grocery store bakeries and even doing it yourself to see where the real cost savings are.

If you are considering making your own wedding cake simplicity will be the key. The idea of using a wedding cupcake tier will have many benefits and the actual display doesn't have to feed your entire guest list. Try using a simple tiered rack with the remaining cupcakes in the kitchen to serve to guests.

Cupcakes make a great alternative to the traditional tiered cake. They can be made in a variety of flavors and arranged on a tiered rack or in a creative design on the cake table.

So what are the benefits of having wedding cupcakes?

• Less staff on hand as there is no need to cut the cake.
• No mess.
• Guests can choose their favorite flavor or decoration making it more personalized.
• Decorating disasters can easily be hidden.
• Simplicity - can be assembled at the last minute.
• Friends and family can help which will keep costs lower and add fun to the wedding preparations.

Wedding cupcakes don't have to be elaborate, just tasty. When decorating, consider using fresh flowers. Fresh flowers can be intertwined with the cupcakes. There are also many flowers that are edible and will make attractive cupcake decorations by simply painting them with beaten egg white and then dipping them in sugar. You will need to leave them to dry but you will find that these flowers will keep for many weeks in an airtight container so you don't need to do them all at the last minute. This will add some real class to the wedding cupcake display and you can bring in the colors of your wedding too.

The top tier could hold a small traditional fruit cake if you like. Or like many popular wedding cupcake ideas these days this could be a carrot cake, a sponge cake or chocolate cake. On the top of this cake you can have your traditional bride and groom figures or something a little different to match your particular hobbies. Perhaps you are racing fans. You could then use a matchbox car. Are you into fishing? Try a lure or a fishing bobber.

Over recent times the wedding cupcake has certainly made its way into the traditional wedding ceremony and is likely to stay around for many years to come.
