Cotton Sheet Sets are Always a Popular Choice

By: Michael Greene

After a long, hard day at work, you need the comfort of your own bed, a place where you can finally get some rest and spend the next 8 hours peacefully dreaming. Of course the only way you are going to get a great night's sleep is if you have a comfortable bed and nice, soft sheets.

When you think about the time that you spend in your bed, it is amazing that we do not spend more effort trying to create the most comfortable sleeping environment that we can. Of course the mattress plays a large part in making a comfortable sleeping environment, but so do high quality sheets.

Of the many types of sheets, the ones made from cotton are the most popular throughout most of the world. Throughout history, cotton has been picked and spun into fabric which could be used for clothing and bedding. Today, there are many different countries throughout the world that are known for the quality of their bed sets. One such country is Egypt.

Egyptian sheets are known throughout the world as the highest quality available. Buying Egyptian cotton bedding will certainly be a wise purchase. Because of their superior quality, these sheets are sure to provide many years of comfort. Other countries including the United States, China and Africa are leaders in their cotton output. Because of the availability of cotton, sheets can be made for a relatively low cost, and this is of course passed onto the consumers.

It's not always where the bedding has been made that makes the biggest difference in the price and quality. You may have heard the term "thread count" when shopping for cotton sheet sets, but you are unsure of what it actually means. Thread count is simply the number of threads that were woven together in a one square inch of fabric. If you were to hold a piece of bedding up to the light, a higher thread count sheet will shield the light better than one with fewer threads.

A higher thread count also means that it will be better insulated, and, therefore, is warmer. For colder climates, a high thread count sheet is best. If you can see the individual threads of a sheet clearly, it's likely that it's a low thread count sheet, possibly 100 or 200 thread count, or TC for short. The highest quality bedding will be 600 thread count or higher and can go as high as 1000 TC.

This measurement of thread count has just been made popular in the past two decades as there has been more of a push to differentiate bedding sheets by their quality. With a higher thread count, you can expect to pay more than you would for a sheet set that may look similar, but have a lower thread count.

When you shop for bedding, you can either buy each piece individually or as a complete set. The largest of these sets is called a bed in a bag. These sets include pillow cases, sheets, a fitted sheet and a comforter. Another way to buy bedding is to buy each sheet individually. This would mean that you would have to buy the fitted sheets, flat sheets and pillow cases all separately.

The last and most popular way to buy sheets is to buy sheet sets. This would include a fitted sheet and a flat sheet and possibly the pillow cases. Most bedding manufacturers offer discounts when you buy sets, rather than buying individually. Cotton bedding sets are of course the most popular, but other materials such as silk sheet sets can also be purchased. A good quality sheet set should last for many, many years if washed following the instructions.

Sheet sets made of cotton are often requested as wedding gifts, through registries at department stores. If you are hesitant about buying one of these gifts because you may appear cheap, take a second look. A good quality sheet set can easily cost $100 and will be appreciated by the bride and groom.

So whether you are buying a bedding as a gift, or it's time to invest into a high quality cotton sheet set, just remember that not all cotton sheets are created equal. You certainly get what you pay for. Spend that little extra and you won't be disappointed with a high quality, high thread count sheets.

A comfortable sleeping environment can help you to have a good night's sleep and you will be rested and ready to go in the morning.
